Seasonal Depression.

I put on a coat as I begin to feel heat deprivation.
Being warm is the only thing I can think of.
How quickly it is gone, no more sunlight.
I have heard these cigarettes kill,
I do believe only I control me.
It's my vice, I need a fix now.

What makes me need one now?
Only I know the true meaning of deprivation.
I do believe only I control me.
Look where I am now, this I never dreamed of.
Who did I step on?  Who did I kill?
God damn, where is the sunlight?

It's funny how we long for sunlight,
especially right now.
Look around, there is no one left to kill.
Loosing Love and Family, I do know deprivation.
That's the man everyone knows of.
I do believe only I control me.

I'm bigger now, look at me.
Open your eyes, I've brought the sunlight.
My power is not something I knew of,
I am aware now.
I strangled your wealth, oxygen deprivation.
I swear I didn't mean to kill.

Does anyone ever mean to kill?
Can you look in the mirror and say good thing him, not me?
That's what we call soul deprivation.
Can you even see the mirror without sunlight?
I'm here to open the window, but not now.
Let me show you what I'm made of.

No one knows the truth or what I speak of.
The eyes of the world are set to kill.
We need change, are you ready?  Are you ready now?
I do believe only I control me.
Break down the wall, show them the sunlight.
Were here to develop, not provide deprivation.

Deprivation of
sunlight, kill
me now.

I think the title of this play is misleading in that it makes the writing seem like overkill. When we remove the title the poem is great. Actually "great" doesn't do this poem justice. I think the entire poem is a metaphor for our entire society. It conveys the conspicuous atrocities done in the dark and the blind eye turned to evil. The underlying theme of Global Warming and its potential is superb.

And the idea of independent thought is fantastic. Are we individuals or has groupthink run amok? Are any of us in control of our own thoughts?

What is our goal as a nation? What role do we have on this planet? Have we lost sight of that?

As I said I absolutely love this poem. I may be reading more into it than intended (I hope not), but interpretation is part of the artistic process. I simply cannot say enough good things about this work of art!!

I was really struck by the last six line stanza. The description of the eyes is so reflective of the world today. I liked the authors assertion of his/her independent thought, but just because one believes of ones own control does it make it true? I love that we are looking for sunlight or enlightenment, perhaps soon.

On their own, I think each fo these stanzas was an achievement. They were all well written and conveyed a world of meaning in their lines. I also enjoyed how the last line of each stanza leads into the first line of the next. It was a good way of tying them all together. I did have trouble, however putting the entire poem together and taking something away from it when looked at as one entire piece. I was fortunate to not have read the title of the poem before I began it, as I think that would have forced me to read it a certain way. It wasnt until I did read the title that I fully understood what the poem was about.

All that aside, to me there is nothing more poetic than cigarettes in literature. I don't know why, but the image of a cigarette, when conveyed properly, always works for me. I guess I should go buy the patch or something...

...or go out for a cigarette.

I'll be right back, im going out for a smoke.
